The film is now under production for a sequel.

Godzilla vs. Kong pits two famous adversaries against one another in a battle for the survival of the Earth. The journey is perilous, but it eventually brings Kong and his guards to Jia, a tiny orphaned girl with whom Kong has formed an unbreakable bond of love and devotion. They find themselves in the path of an enraged Godzilla, who attacks them. All that is known about the mystery that exists deep inside the Earth's core is only the beginning.

Godzilla and Kong are currently the only active Titans on Earth in 2024, five years after fighting and killing his extraterrestrial nemesis Ghidorah for dominance in 2019. The climate on Skull Island has become unstable as a result of Ghidorah's storm combining with the storm cell that surrounds the island all the time, forcing Monarch to confine Kong inside a dome-shaped facility that simulated the island's environment, with an orphaned young Iwi girl named Jia, who is deaf and can communicate with Kong via sign language, providing him company.

However, when Jia pays a visit to Kong and extends a doll to him, the Titan notices and promptly throws a tree at it, realizing that he is stuck within the biodome.

The Titan Truth Podcast is a Titan conspiracy theory podcast hosted by Apex Cybernetics employee Bernie Hayes. Hayes had just completed downloading material from the Titan facility in Pensacola when Godzilla appeared and attacked. Bernie finds a curious piece of technology among the remains of the facility after Godzilla's rampage that resembles a big robotic eye.

In a modified barge, Nathan, Ilene, Jia, and an Apex crew lead by Walter's daughter Maia board to prevent a mildly drugged Kong from escaping. Kong is locked up to keep him from escaping. Kong gets restless and upset one rainy night, and he begins to tug on the shackles that keep him restrained. Jia calms him down by allowing her and Kong to hold fingers in solidarity as Kong signs the word "home" much to Ilene's surprise. Later, Ilene tells Nathan how she raised Jia as her adopted daughter when violent and unpredictable storms killed most of the Iwi and their parents, but Jia herself was the sole survivor since Kong protected her, resulting in the two of them developing a strong affinity with one another.

It is at this moment that Jia detects Godzilla's approach by sensing vibrations through the ship, as the Titan comes and battles the soldiers before capitulating and almost drowning Kong and the others on board. The gang is saved from drowning thanks to Nathan's successful release of Kong by unlocking his shackles. This allows him to combat Godzilla underwater for long enough for Godzilla to swim to the surface and turn the barge back on its side, freeing the party from their chains. Kong gets onboard a neighboring aircraft copyright in order to meet Godzilla, who also climbs aboard to confront Kong. The two Titans trade vicious punches until fighter aircraft divert Godzilla's attention long enough for Kong to shove him back into the sea. In order to avoid the explosion, Godzilla shoots his atomic breath from under the copyright, but Kong manages to get off in time, only for Godzilla to wrap his tail around Kong and take him into the depths of the ocean, where he intends to drown the Titan.

However, their fight is broken up when Godzilla gets confused by depth charges. This gives Kong the chance to come up for air and breathe.

With no other choice, Nathan chooses to disable all the ships' power to fool Godzilla into believing he destroyed them and Kong vanquished. He swims away, satisfied with his victory, after examining the wrecked fleet. As they prepare to restart the ships, the crew decides to fly Kong to an Antarctica entrance site for the Hollow Earth, where Godzilla was initially frozen. Jia explains to Kong that his home is beyond the door, but he refuses to walk through it.

Madison and Josh track down Bernie, who recognizes Madison as Mark's daughter and decides to help them in their investigation. The team discovers that the "eye" Bernie had described before has disappeared when they arrive to Apex headquarters in New York. The group made the mistake of mistakenly locking and transferring Skullcrawler eggs through an underground tube to Hong Kong, which resulted in the eggs being trapped and moved.

In the next scene, it is revealed that Walter aims to harness the energy of the Hollow Earth in order to overcome Mechagodzilla's constraints. Madison then understands that Mechagodzilla is the cause for Godzilla's assault in the first place: Apex is attempting to replace him and all of the Titans in order for humans to become the Earth's apex species, which is why Godzilla attacked. When Madison and the others are trying to find an exit, they come across a room where Ren is sitting inside the severed head of Ghidorah, which has been transformed into a biological supercomputer and cockpit for Ren to control Mechagodzilla through radio waves after Apex acquired it from Alan Jonah five years ago during Godzilla's battle with Ghidorah.

It looks like Skull Island inside the Hollow Earth. They are walking through the countryside when they are attacked by a pair of Warbats. One of them destroys one of the HEAVs, but the other doesn't. When the first Warbat was killed, Kong swung its body into the second one, which knocked it out, but the creature came back and wrapped itself around him. This gives Kong a chance to get away from the Warbat. The creature is then hit with missiles from Nathan's team in their HEAV, giving Kong a chance to break free and beat the Warbat to death before eating its internal parts.

In response to the roar of Godzilla as the monster offers him with another challenge, Kong accepts and continues to make his way through the hole produced by Godzilla's atomic breath to Hong Kong with his axe in hand, with Ilene and Nathan following him in their HEAV. When Kong arrives in Hong Kong and confronts Godzilla, he battles him again again, this time obtaining the upper hand over the Titan to the point that he shoves his axe down Godzilla's throat in order to prevent him from launching his atomic breath again. King Kong realizes that his axe can not only deflect Godzilla's atomic breath, but it can also absorb it, and he uses his weapon to strike the Titan in the thigh, however Godzilla quickly takes the axe and tosses it away. When Godzilla strikes, Kong uses the structures of Hong Kong and his greater agility to escape and evade his blows. After retrieving his axe, he charges it and unleashes an explosion that knocks both Titans back, giving Nathan the impression that Kong has won the second fight.

Godzilla shows pity and saves Kong's life before walking away, leaving Kong alive but seriously hurt, ultimately losing consciousness due to commotio cordis.

Walter tells Ren to send out Mechagodzilla to slay Godzilla upon his return to the Apex headquarters. Ren cautions him about utilizing the new Hollow Earth energy source without testing it first, but Walter dismisses his warnings and tells him to activate the mecha. Simultaneously, security apprehends Bernie, Madison, and Josh for breaching Apex headquarters and transports them to Walter. Madison accuses Walter of inciting Godzilla to war and initiating all of this, however Walter boldly answers that he took responsibility for allowing humanity to fight back against Godzilla and the Titans.

Mechagodzilla suddenly goes crazy under the influence of both the energy source and Ghidorah's brain networks, ending in the robot murdering Walter with a sweep of its hand and Ren's death by electrocution, unbeknownst to Walter as his back is turned as he talks about his creation. Mechagodzilla, now possessed by Ghidorah's mind, escapes from the Apex facility under Victoria Peak Mountain and rampages over the city before being confronted by Godzilla. Mechagodzilla quickly approaches Godzilla and launches a volley of missiles at its biological counterpart before the two engage in combat.

Meanwhile, Josh and Bernie attempt to remotely disable the rogue robot, and Madison calls Mark for assistance, as Godzilla and Mechagodzilla fight, with Godzilla gaining the upper hand and scorching him. The three approach an unconscious Kong, where Jia notices his pulse is fading while Mechagodzilla continues to pummel Godzilla. They can't produce a big enough charge to restart Kong's heart, but Nathan remembers Maia's earlier comment about the HEAVs producing enough power to power Las Vegas for a week, so he flies the last HEAV onto Kong's chest and sets it to self-destruct, detonating the craft and releasing a huge electrical charge that instantly revives Kong.

Kong wakes to see Godzilla and Mechagodzilla battling before encountering Jia, who attempts to persuade him that Godzilla isn't truly his opponent. Though Kong doesn't believe her at first as he continues to witness Godzilla being overrun by Mechagodzilla, Jia explains the reality to him that the robot is the "real" adversary, not Godzilla. After a while, Kong ultimately accepts and sets aside his hatred before marching into combat to aid Godzilla while repairing his dislocated arm.

Madison re-introduces Mark to Josh and Bernie, who are delighted to see Mark and invite him into his program to discuss the Monarch facility in Roswell. Godzilla appears out of nowhere, prompting Kong to pick up his axe and continue the fight. Godzilla does not attack, instead staring Kong down. Kong lowers his axe, thereby ending the war between his and Godzilla's species. Godzilla and Kong are now on equal footing, and Godzilla returns to the water calmly, with Kong and everyone else observing.

On April 17, 2021, it was announced that Godzilla vs. Kong had eclipsed the overall box office receipts of the film Godzilla: King of the Monsters, despite the fact that box office receipts were still slightly reduced as a result of the epidemic.

Godzilla and King Kong haven't starred in a film together since 1962's King Kong vs. Godzilla.

This is second movie involving King Kong that Kyle Chandler has starred in, the other being Peter Jackson's 2005 adaptation.

With Chandler's involvement in King Kong, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and Godzilla vs. Kong, this results in the actor's notable distinction in being the only person to be present in the cast of a King Kong film, a Godzilla film, and a crossover film between the two.

A possible allusion to Martin Riggs' iconic talent of a similar kind in the Lethal Weapon series might be made in the moment when Kong slams his right shoulder against a structure to realign it after it had been dislocated previously.

The film has several references to Neon Genesis Evangelion:

The location where Mechagodzilla is stationed is similar to the Central Dogma in that it is subterranean and has a pyramid on top.
